The governor of Nyeri County Nderitu Gachagua, 64, has passed on last night at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London while undergoing treatment, his brother Rigathi Gachagua has said.
“The governor died at 2: 15 am Friday. Close family members were present,” he said.
“He’s left us after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer and we have accepted God’s will,” he added.
Gachagua has been absent from the public limelight since late last year when the local county assembly unsuccessfully tabled motion of impeachment against him.
At one point, opposition Nyeri politicians claimed that the governor had stepped down.
Gachagua appeared briefly during President Uhuru’s visit to the area in November and quickly returned to the UK for treatment.
Gachagua’s body will be returned for burial, his brother said.
Gachagua will be the first governor to die while serving his term.
