MANDERA—The Garre Council of Elders have unveiled a political line-up two months after they asked serving political leaders to give up their seats.

At a colourful event in Takaba, the elders endorsed four members of parliament to contest in the next year elections: Kullow Maalin Hassan (Banisa), Adan Haji Yussuf (Mandera West) and Mohamed Abdi Ibrahim alias Apolo (Mandera North). Eighteen MCA’s were also annoited.

Former Provincial Commissioner Noor Hassan was endorsed to contest as the next governor of Mandera while Former UDF chairman Hassan Osman alias Cereal was named as the annointed senator.

However, the County women representative slot and the Mandera South MP was left out to be decided by the Rer Ali sub-clan elders to which the current governor Ali Roba belongs to.

After the final decision was announced, clashes erupted where one person is feared dead and scores others injured.

Ahmed Abdirashid, a journalist based in Mandera said the casualties are on their way to Mandera referral hospital.

“They are being transported to Mandera and we expect them from 10pm tonight,” Ahmed said.

The clashes are believed to have erupted as the result of the political line-up after the supporters of the left-out candidates read mischeaf in the final line up.
