NAIROBI—The U.S. forces conducted three precision airstrikes in Somalia that killed six members of the Al-Shabab militant group on Wednesday.

A U.S. Africa Command statement said the morning drone strikes occurred about 260 kilometers (160 miles) south of the capital, Mogadishu.

“We assess no civilians were near the site, we have no details on the Al-Shabab members killed.” Robyn Mack, spokeswoman for the U.S. Africa Command told the press.

Al-Shabaab has pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda and is dedicated to providing safe haven for terrorist throughout the world. The group has publicly committed to planning and conducting attacks against the US and its partners in the region.

“U.S. forces will continue to use all authorized and appropriate measures to protect Americans and to disable terrorist threats. This includes partnering with AMISOM and Somali National Security Forces; targeting terrorists, their training camps and safe havens throughout Somalia, the region and around the world.” the Africa command statement added.

The U.S. military has carried out several airstrikes against the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab in the Horn of Africa nation since President Donald Trump approved expanded military operations against the group. The U.S. said the latest strikes were carried out in coordination with Somalia’s government.

Four Al-Shabab members were last week killed in two separate drone attacks by the U.S.
