NAIROBI—The government has extended the dusk to dawn curfew in Mandera County as today marks the end of a two-month curfew that was imposed on October 27th.

The curfew takes effect Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm. It will last until 28 March next year.

In a special gazette notice released on Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaisserry called on the residents to comply to the new order.

“This order applies to all that area comprised in Mandera Town, Omar Jill’o, Arabin, Fino, Lafey, Kutulo, Elwak and the environs of the said locations extended to 20 kilometers from Kenya/Somalia border.

“Every person who resides within  the sub county shall…remain indoors in the premises at which they reside or at such other premises as may be authorised,” the gazette notice read in part.

The curfew was introduced after 12 people; a woman and eleven men were killed at a low-cost guest house—Bishaaro Lodge in Mandera town in October.

Earlier in the month, six other people were killed in similar fashion when Al Shabab militants stormed a building that housed construction workers at Bula Works in Mandera town.

Both attack were staged in the dead of the night when the victims were asleep.
