WAJIR—Wajir South legislator has asked the county government of Wajir to act swiftly to arrest the growing cases of suspected cholera outbreak in Dadaja Bula location.

Abdullahi Diriye said the outbreak was a concern as last minute action would leave the community without protection. “I am concerned about the outbreak of acute water diarrhea/suspected cholera in Dadajabula, Wajir South,” he said.  Abdirahmen Dekow, a community leader in the location who broke the story, asked for help saying the area did not have a medical facility to treat the patients.

He said medical examination has not been carried out to ascertain if the diarrhea was caused by cholera outbreak while calling on the county health department to move in speed.

“It has not been confirmed yet if this is cholera or not. The county Govt continue to do good efforts to respond to the outbreak but is overwhelmed due to the high number of cases and the fact that this type of outbreaks require special focus,” he said.

He continued to call on emergency service providers to chip in and address the concern. He said if the outbreak is confirmed to be true, the nearby refugee camps are at risk.

“I wish to call upon other actors specially Kenya Red Cross and MSF, which has a big medical center in the nearby Dagahley to help. If this outbreak is not contained it has the risk of spreading to the nearby area including Dagahley, abd Ifo which host huge population,” he stated.
