HEALTH services at Wajir Level Five Hospital suspended after health workers downed their tools accusing the county government of ignoring their demands.
In a notice of strike seen by Wajir Times, Kenya National Union of Nurses Wajir branch served the County Government with a notice of strike a week ago, but their protest went unheeded until Friday when the health workers decided to leave the hospital premises, urging those in need of service of their frustration with the county government.
They said they resorted to strike to push for proper working conditions, allowances and salary increment.
“The county government has constructed many dispensaries and health centers, but has completely neglected and forgotten the status of the health workers,” the notice read in part.

Abdisamad Yassin said he spent a whole day camped at the hospital with no medic in sight. He said he wants the strike settled so that his sick sister can get medical attention.
Sited beside him is Mama Rukia Abdullahi who trekked from Makaror, a village few kilometers to the north of Wajir town. She pleaded with Governor Abdullahi Mohamed to solve the stalemate since the patients were suffering.

The health workers instructed both in-patients and out-patients at the hospital to seek treatment elsewhere.

The County government of Wajir has not reacted to the strike by the time of publishing this story.
