Garissa school for orphan girls records impressive results

GARISSA—An orphanage center-cum-girl’s boarding school had capped an impressive results in the just released KCPE results.

Umulkheir Primary School in Garissa County which is home to survivors of early marriage, rape cases and orphans beat all odds and produced a starling results.

Arfon Mohamed, who aspires to be a doctor and who wants to join Alliance High School scored 390 while Sahara Mohamed, who wants to be a journalist got 382 marks.

The school had 30 pupils sitting for the exams with 15 of them being orphans managed a mean score of 349.

Most of the schools in insecurity-prone parts of the Northeastern region defied all the odds to post impressive results.

According to Umulkheir Girls Primary manager Madam Maryam Hussein Abdirahman, the school has performed exemplary well compared to previous years considering the challenges girls undergo.

The center is managed by WomanKind Kenya, a non-governmental organization that advocates for empowerment of women and girls.

Mrs Hussein said the achievement by the girls shows even the less advantage children can perform if given chance to realize their dreams adding that girls are faced with numerous challenges.

“Generally girls have lots challenges including having to do house chores after school and sometimes being responsible of a family,” she told journalists at the school.

The center whose founder member is now Ijara Member of Parliament Sophia Abdinoor was established to give second chance to orphan girls and those fleeing from female genital mutilation as well as early marriage.

When the Kulan Post visited, teachers were celebrating with some of their former pupils carrying placards saying their hard work has paid off.

The center, according to the manager of the center, is fully occupied to its capacity with160 pupils adding that the management has plans to expand so as to benefit more girls.
