MOGADISHU—Somalia has been identified as the country with the most calls per user.

In a survey conducted by Truecaller, an application with 250 million subscribers that allows users to manage their call, also revealed that Japanese made the least number of calls per user.

The tech company said it blocked 2.5 billion fake calls from reaching contacts that were subscribed to their service.

“In once instance, we blocked seven million calls by a single Egyptian spammer,” Truecaller said in a statement.

Truecaller users made at least two billion genuine calls over the year.

“The data was aggregated anonymously from incoming and outgoing calls during the period of January 1st, 2016 to October 31, 2016 to understand the trends and usage,” the statement added.

Japan is among the leading countries in the world where telephony network is up to date unlike in Somalia where digital penetration remains the lowest in the world caused by political anarchy and piracy.

“The country’s access to international submarine fibre optic cables was delayed until 2014, largely due to concerns resulting from piracy as well as to social difficulties and political anarchy,” BuddeComm, a global independent telecommunications research and consultancy firm reported.

“The landing of the first cable ended Somalia’s dependence on expensive satellite connectivity for internet access. Consequently, Somalia’s Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have been able to provide much improved services, though international bandwidth remains very limited,” the firm added.
