GARISSA—Garissa Township member of Parliament, Aden Barre Duale has mocked the Secretary-General of Kenya National Union of Teachers, Wilson Sossion following last year’s expledid performance by pupils from the region.

Speaking at a hotel in Garissa Sunday when he met the local headteachers, Duale, who also happens to be the Majority-Leader in the National Assembly said latest performance from the region has indicated Sossion did not triumph in his quest to dessert the children of the region when they needed teachers the most.

“Sossion betrayed the people of this region by inciting non-local teachers to stay away from the region as if the locals were responsible for the insecurity, but we thank other Kenyans who stood by us during the hour of need, we also appreciate teachers who remained behind to ensure children perform,” Duale said.
“The Knut Secretary General wanted children in Garissa to fail but they have shown they can perform and cannot be betrayed by hateful people like Wilson Sossion, shame on him,” he added.
Wilson Sossion has called on teachers from other parts of the country to leave schools in the region over security fears following the dawn ambush on a Nairobi-bound bus from Mandera by the Somalia-based militants group Al Shabab who slaughtered 28 passengers, most of them teachers.
Although the armed group did not specifically target the teachers, Sossion orderd the remaining ones to seek transfers to schools in other parts of the country.  Local leaders and the government assured teachers of their security, although Sossion insisted that they leave.
Faced by the challenge of the teacher shortage, the counties of Wajir, Madera and Garissa devices their own ways to deal with the shortage.
While releasing the KCPE, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i noted increase in the performance of the region.
The mean scores for counties in the region were 176.86 up from 173.68 (Garissa), 183.49 up from 175.34 (Wajir) and 173.68 up from 151.97 (Mandera).
