FRIDAY BULLETIN—Muslim residents in Shinyalu Subcounty of Kakamega County have been told to exhibit good Islamic moral characters and use education to reduce the existing prejudice and misconceptions against Islam and Muslims.
While addressing Muslim faithful at the newly constructed Shinyalu Jamia Mosque grounds during Idd Baraza, the chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kakamega County chapter Patrick Chungani said Muslims have important obligations to play in presenting Islam positively in their daily lives, adding that this will go to great length to promote good relations between Muslims and people of different faith backgrounds.
He singled out education as one of the area that Muslims in Shinyalu are lagging behind stating that Islam is known to put a lot of emphasis in education and wondered why there were no Muslim sponsored schools in the area despite the high population of Muslims.
Muslim Education Council (MEC) Western regional chairperson Hassan Ngeri noted that while Islam laid emphasis on education to benefit humanity it was unfortunate that many Muslims were not taking education seriously.
Ngeri encouraged Muslim parents to take education of their children seriously and inculcate good Islamic ideals in them to mould them as future leaders.
He further encouraged Muslim students to work extra hard in their studies and maintain discipline in order to excel in academic endeavours.
On his part the Imam of Kakamega Jamia Mosque Sheikh Ibrahim Sadalla urged local residents to work together in promoting the development of the area.
