WAJIR—Students in Wajir County may soon report to school without teachers—once again—after non local teachers began fleeing from schools on Friday. This comes after an attack suspected to have been carried out by Al Shabaab militants at Qarsa primary school.

Noor Barqad, the secretary of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) in the county confirmed the mass exodus of teachers from the county.

Khorof Harar, Wajir Bor, Sarman, Riba, Tarbaj and Kutulo are among the schools affected by the exits of the non-local teachers.

This is not the first time non local teachers leave schools in Wajir. In 2015, an attack by Al Shabaab on Mandera bus which left several people dead made many teachers flee various schools in North Eastern region.

Fifteen primary schools are reported to have been affected by the exit of the non-local teachers who comprise of over 60 percent of the staff in Wajir County.

“If the leaders will not take any action, we as the union will make sure our staff vacate the schools. We will not allow teachers to die in the hands of those terrorists,” Noor said.

The withdrawal of teachers will deal a huge blow to the education sector in Wajir  county which has always recorded poor performances in the National examinations.
