GARISSA—At least five paramilitary personnel were killed and three others injured on Wednesday when their vehicle ran over an explosive at Liboi, Garissa County.

The nine of them were on patrol along the Kenyan-Somalia border at 8am when their vehicle hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED)

Dadaab Deputy County Commissioner Harun Kamau said three others were critically injured in the attack on the security officers who were on patrol duty.

“There was an attack this morning targeting officers on normal patrol. Unfortunately, we lost five officers while three others have been injured,” Mr Kamau said.

Garissa county commissioner Joshua Chepchieng’ confirmed the incident but did not provide more details.

“It is true that we have lost our officers this morning in the unfortunate incident. Give us more time to piece up information on the same.” chepchieng stated.

The deaths were the latest and came after a long lull from terror related incidents that has been experienced in the area at large. There were indications of imminent attacks in the area. Locals reported to authorities of movements that indicated Al-Shabaab terror group was planning an attack.

The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and GSU are part of the multi-agency team fighting the war in Somalia.

Patrols along the Kenya-Somalia border are part of their mandate as they seek to ward off retaliatory attacks by al Shabaab.
