Kenya’s largest solar plant set to be launched in Garissa county

GARISSA—Garissa residents have something to smile about as they are set to benefit from the largest solar plant in East and Central Africa that is situated in Raya, Sankuri division, Balambala sub-county.

The Ksh. 13.5 billion solar project lies on an 80 acre piece of land which consists of 300,000 solar panels and is set to be completed early September this year.

CEO of Rural Electrification Authority (REA) Peter Mbugua while touring and inspecting the project said that the project will generate an additional 54 megawatts of power into the national grid.

“When the project is completed the relevant authorities will connect the project to the national grid Raya sub-station.” said the CEO.

He also said that Garissa residents will benefit from the project as soon as it is done and it will establish a power supply in Garissa and its environs.

Accompanied by engineers from China, Mbugua stated that over 200,000 people will benefit from the Raya project.

He noted the plant implemented by the incumbent government is also funded by Exim Bank of china.

The Solar plant is part of a long term project under the vision 2030 set to replace the expensive and environmental hazardous diesel powered engines.

Speaking to Kulan Post Garissa residents did not hide their joy terming the development as good news.

“We will be able to improve our small scale businesses and have the opportunity to open up food processing industries.” Said Mr.Salah.

The government will also expand the project to other neighboring counties of Wajir and Mandera.
