Muslim girls’ school faces closure over inadequate toilets in Kakamega County

KAKAMEGA—Mumias Muslim girls secondary school risks closure after it was served with a notice because of lacking adequate toilets for the students in the school compound.

The learning institution has been issued with a 28 day ultimatum by the local public health office to put up 19 more new toilets and enhance the institutions sanitation.

Six of the school’s toilets collapsed late last week after heavy rains flooded the compund leading to walls of the toilets collapsing. The school’s over two hundred and fifty five students have been forced to share the remaining five toilets.

Anthony Ngaira, the Mumias west sub-county Public Health Officer has threatened to get a court order for the closure of the school if the management will not do anything to improve the situation.

”If the school management will not have done anything or taken action within 28 days, we will seek a court order for the school to be closed ,” said Ngaira.

In 2015, the school in Kakamega county was closed and students sent home following alleged invasion by ghosts.

The ghosts allegedly invaded the Islamic School on Sunday afternoon, sending some girls into hysteria.
