NAIROBI—Wajir County women representative is set to roll-out countywide youth empowerment program in a bid to reduce growing unemployment.

Fatuma Gedi popularly known by her nickname Kabambay stated that the five-year program dubbed “Vijana Mambo Yote” would uplift the young people in Wajir from reliance on white-collar jobs, adding that it would put their future in their hands to decide.

The program will see youths receive training and funds to start their own businesses as well as scholarships for advanced vocational training.

“This will significantly reduce unemployment and over reliance on office jobs,” the youthful leader said at the Parliament building.

She added that the program would provide funding for the youths in the six constituencies.

“I am a youth myself and I understand what they want and how they want it. My decision to come up with this program was largely influenced by what I came across in the campaign trail.

“When elections are over and victory certain, leaders tend to work with not-so youthful individuals and contractors while forgetting that the real people who yearn for empowerment and attention are the youths,” she noted.

She said she would lobby her colleagues in the parliament to demand for increase in the youth empowerment funds.

“They say a friend is he who teaches you how to fish and not otherwise. Instead of giving them cash, it will do them better if we identify and present opportunities for them and challenge them to tap into their creativity,” Fatuma

The program was one of her campaign pledges that earned her massive support among the youthful voters in the county.
