Ali Bunow demands arrest of Isiolo MP over killings in Lagdera

GARISSA—Garissa County political leaders led by Ali Bunow Korane now want Isiolo south Member of Parliament Abdi Koropu and attackers who killed three people in Elderre on the border of Garissa-Isiolo arrested.

Burale Dekow, Mohamed Farah and Abdi Derow were killed on Friday while herding their camels. Three other people sustained gunshot wounds.

While addressing his constituents last week, the Isiolo south MP said they will be defending themselves from Lagdera residents whom he accused of settling on their land.

”We are facing huge problems from our neighbors from Lagdera, they are settling on our land and they must leave,” the MP said.

The legislator also asked his constituents  to remain close to the disputed Isiolo-Garissa border to thwart further encroachment of their land.

Garissa Senator Yussuf Haji, Governor Ali Korane, MPs Abdikarim Osman (Fafi), Abdi Shurie (Balambala), Sophia Abdinoor (Ijara) and MCAs pointed an accusing finger at the lawmaker.

Governor Korane said the MP’s utterances sparked the violence.

“As leaders, we need to be careful with what we say in public. We should champion peace and not sow seeds of discord. There is no benefit in people fighting and killing each other, he noted.

Lagdera Member of Parliament Mohamed Garane in liaison with the National security service  trained and deployed sixty Kenya Police Reservist in the constituency.

The first time MP said the deployment of the officers will reduce banditry and insecurity his constituency was facing.

“It is my hope that the pretense of security and enhanced visibility of local Police reservists will be a deterrent to banditry activities, It is also my believe that this will bring to a close the senseless killings witnessed in the recent past, ” Hire said in a Facebook post.

Last year, the two warring communities from this two neighboring  constituencies agreed to end the  perennial conflicts that results into  deaths and destruction of property.

Senator Yussuf Haji said it was unacceptable for armed militias to kill innocent people over issues that can be resolved amicably.

“We can’t allow people to take the law into their own hands. We will pursue this matter to the end and ensure the people behind the killings are arrested,” he said.

A peace meeting involving the warring communities has been called on August 8.
