Kulan PostGARISSA—Garissa senator Yusuf Haji has cautioned social media users to refrain from attacking elected leaders .
Speaking on Friday in Garissa town, Haji said people should verify information first before rushing to unhealthy criticism on social media.
“I have no problem with social media, but my biggest worry is how it is being used. The habit of attacking people over unsubstantiated claims is unfair. This is an area of concern especially to the elderly people,” Haji said.
“Don’t use social media to soil people’s names for the sake of it or because you have personal differences. Let’s respect elected leaders, even if we don’t support them.”added the senator.
This after it was alleged that Sh8 million was used on a two day conference organised by a task force on education. Some angry residents took to social media accusing the executive of using the forum for personal gain.
Senator Haji maintained that social media platforms can easily mess the society if not used responsibly.
Garissa Governor Ali Korane who officiated the opening of the conference on Thursday appealed to educationists to think outside the box and come up with workable solutions to counter poor education standards in the county.
“Such a big number of our children out of school is a disaster.Unless we leaders here today dedicate our energies to tackle some of these issues derailing and dragging us down, we are unlikely to go anywhere,”Korane said.
Garissa Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane who was also in attendance noted that though education is a a function of the national government, the county must improve standards and have a duty to maintain, equip and finance the schools where need arises.
