Floods kill and destroy properties worth millions in Garissa

GARISSA—A 13 year old girl died after their house collapsed following heavy rains in Bula Tawakal, north of Garissa town.

Most houses in Garissa County are flooded as sewerages are reported to have bursts. There are no organized rescue teams.

Mohamed Noor, a resident told Kulan Post the County lacked proper planning as most houses were constructed on grabbed roads.

“The town lacks proper planning, people here have built on waterways and left no space for roads expabsion. Rescue team cannot access most houses because we selfishly grabbed road reserves,” Noor said.

Several children were reported missing after they were washed away by the floods in Bula Nyuki.

Families in Mororo, Bakuyu and Ziwani have been forced to seek shelter on higher ground in Garissa town after their houses were submerged and valuables washed away.

According to Kenya Red Cross county coordinator Tusmo Ogle, residents of Mansabubu in Fafi constituency are marooned and efforts are underway to rescue them.

She said the only boat that was being used to evacuate victims has broken down and is under repair.

ON Friday, a woman died after she was swept by floods while crossing a road in Bura.

Garissa county commissioner Joshua Chepchieng on Thursday told residents living along River Tana to move to higher ground as water levels had risen, posing danger.
