Kulan PostGARISSA—The Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) has closed Garissa-Bura road following widespread damage on sections of the road.
KENHA closed the road barely four days after a woman who was trying to cross a section of the road was swept be floods and died.
Speaking to Journalist on Saturday , Njuguna Katitu, the KENHA maintenance director said the highway will remain closed till when the rains will subside.
“We send warning to the public against using or trying to walk across flooded areas. It is dangerous,” Njuguna noted.
Passengers traveling to Bura from Garissa will now use the Nairobi-Mombasa route while those coming from Bura to Garissa will be forced to use Hola-Malindi-Mombasa route.
Roads to Masalani, Ijara, Balambala and Madogashe are also cut off by the heavy rains that is continuing to hit most parts of Garissa County.
KENHA will now repair major roads that linl North Eastern and the Coast Counties.
Those hit hard by the closure of this road are miraa traders who cannot get their goods to Bura and Hola.
Miraa trader Abdikadir Jama said they are counting losses and the government should repair and open the road as soon as possible.
Garissa County residents who reside along the now inflated Tana river and flood prone areas have been asked to migrate to safer areas.
