GARISSA—The family of Idriss Mukhtar has shown concern that justice may not prevail in the shooting of their son, pointing a finger at Korane, whom it said is a “prime suspect”.

Speaking on Sunday through their lawyer Charles Kanjama, the family noted that Idriss was keen to establish Korane’s academic qualifications.

“There are very strong suspicion that the academic qualifications of the current governor of Garissa are actually fake or forged or fraudulent,” said Kanjama.

“The same documents were submitted to the EACC and IEBC to enable the governor get clearance both in 2013 and 2017,” he added.

Kanjama revealed to reporters that he had written  to the University of Nairobi seeking clarification on the governor’s academic documents.

He noted that he received a reply confirming the governor never attended or obtained academic documents from the institution.

Dr Aden Mukhtar, Idriss father noted they had been informed that initial investigators were thrown out and the matter taken to DCI Kinoti’s office.

“Our concern is after arresting the governor who is also a suspect the investigations seems to have gone down,” noted Dr Mukhtar.

However, speaking in Dertu Secondary School in Dadaab during a prize-giving day on Saturday, Garissa Governor Ali Korane denied taking part in the attempted murder of former Finance Executive.

“It is unfortunate that in this incident, things have taken a different angle where I am now being accused of being involved. I want to state categorically that I was not involved. I don’t stand to benefit in any way,” Korane said.

“Because there was a lot of propaganda that I was involved in this case, I was only required to tell police what I know. I was only questioned for 39 minutes, contrary to rumours that I was arrested,” he added.

Human right activist Boniface Mwangi on Friday through his twitter account alleged that Ali Bunow had masterminded the shooting of former Garissa county CEC.

A woman, Mr Korane’s bodyguard and the governor’s cousin are still being held at different police stations in connection with the shooting.

Idriss Mukhtar is in a coma at Nairobi Hospital after he was shot in the head two weeks ago in Naiorbi’s Kileleshwa.
