GARISSA—Garissa governor  Ali Korane has  refuted claims that his predecessor and former governor Nathif Jamaa was under pressure when he withdrew the case challenging his election in the August 8th General Elections.

Korane was speaking during this year’s Jamhuri day celebrations held at Garissa Primary School grounds where he commended Nathif for finding it wise to drop the case. The deal of withdrawing the petition was influenced by clan elders.

Commenting on the issue for the first time, Korane said that it will bring peace among communities that was deeply divided along political lines followings protracted campaigns.

“I want to personally make it clear that there was no inducement from me or any quarters nor was there any pressure for Nathif to drop the case,” Korane said.

Korane also thanked the former governor, saying Nathif saw it in his own volition and wisdom, that the interest of the people overrides his own.

The gorvenor  urged the residents to focus in developing the county now that the pettion is history.

Although Nathif has not come out to publicly deny or admit that he had in deed withdrawn the case, his clan elders who were involved in the negotiation insisted that they had his blessings.

Korane was who was attending his first national celebration since he was elected into office, though did not mention whether he has engaged Nathif regarding the matter.

The governor also said that he will initiate talks with the all communities residing in Garissa to promote peace and co-existence.

“Next week we will hold a maojor conference that will bring together all communities residing in Garissa,” he said.

“We want to focus our energy in bringing together all the residents irrespective of their political persuasions. We will bring on board Sultans of major clans, elders, women, clerics, the disabled, youth among others so that we all move in same direction,” Korane added.

The governor further said that he will engage the county assembly to enhance laws that will empower sultans, peace committee members so that they play a major role in dealing with conflicts that has largely contributed to under development.
