GARISSA—Parents of children with disability in NorthEastern Counties have been urged to take advantage of the special schools in the area to empower them with skills to make them independent.

Majority leader in the National Assembly, Aden Duale said that there have been numerous cases of parents hiding the disabled children as they shy away from the society.

“I want to urge all parents to shun the culture of hiding their children with special needs,I encouraged parents to enroll the disabled students in schools since education is a universal right”.

Local leaders should make sure no child is at home when they are supposed to be in school,” said Duale.

Duale was speaking in Garissa on Sunday when he visited Garissa Special school for the deaf, where he donated desks and assorted food stuff items to facilitate the special children education.

The Garissa Township MP said that there is need to ensure the special needs children are empowered as most of those in schools already have proven that they are capable people.

Take disabled children to special schools, NEP parents advised. “These children have the potential to turn into very useful persons in the society and so they should not be hidden. Let’s give them a chance to grow and acquire knowledge,” he said.

He pledged that through the National Government-Constituency Development Fund(NG-CDF ) will continue to equip the school so that students joining secondary will not have to travel all the way to Maseno and Kerugoya to pursue education

The Majority leader added that he will seek help from the Ministry of Education and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to ensure that the special needs trained teachers are posted and assigned in the school and the necessary text books for sign language are provided to cater for the educational needs for the deaf.

He further stated that he shall also consult with Jamia Mosque and other Islamic institutions to post an Islamic teacher to teach the students Islamic education using sign language.

Garissa Special School for the deaf comprising of primary and secondary sections is the only school of its kind in the pastoralist region with over 156 students enrolled.
