NAIROBI—Hailemariam Desalegn, the Ethiopian prime minister has submitted resignation letter to his party during an emergency meeting of the ruling Ethiopian People’s Democratic Front.
Its unclear if the party will accept his resignation.
Haile Mariam becomes the first top most offical to resign in Ethiopia while serving in public office.
He served as Prime Minister since 2012 after he was hand-picked by the late Meles Zanawi.
The resignation comes amid political crisis and unrest in the Horn of Africa country, which has released thousands of prisoners to ease tensions.
The Horn of Africa country has been wracked by violence for almost three years, with protests first breaking out in Oromiya province over allegations of land grabs.
“Unrest and a political crisis have led to the loss of lives and displacement of many,” Hailemariam said in a televised address to the country
