NAIROBI—House Majority Leader and Garissa Township Member of Parliament, Aden Duale, weighed in on the gang raping of a fifteen year old student in Habaswein in Wajir County that triggered criticism on social media.
The Majority leader said that the suspects ought to be stoned to death according the sharia law.
“In Islam, women are protected and honored,” Duale said.
“Islamic religion respects women more than any other religion, if we follow the sharia law or the teachings of Islam, those who are found guilty of rape should be stoned to death,” Duale added.
Duale gave his views on Sunday on the rape case that happened in Wajir amid public outburst on the matter.
The rape victim is undergoing treatment at the Nairobi women hospital after that harrowing experience at the hands of the rapists.
According to area OCPD, more than five girls have been raped in Habaswein, Wajir County, between January 2017 to January 2018.
Most rape cases in Wajir county do not reach Kenyan courts as the matter is usually handled by elders in what is famously known as Maslaha process.
Some Kenyans have criticized Maslaha process, arguing that it does not give rapists the punishment they deserve.
Rape is punishable by life imprisonment in the Kenyan constitution.
