We Somalis don’t
respect time we are always in a hurry we want to be served first (Courtesy)Early morning we arrive in jaribu primary school to carry out a documentary on the challenges facing school children in north-eastern region. The morning was col and chilly, summarily resembling the amazon environment, a rare situation in this sunny region of the county.
As an order of protocol and norm of manner we were directed to the headmasters office to carry out our work. We were told to wait for him. Minutes later he came back accompanied by other people. He informed s to wait for him at the waiting bay as the rules of the school were, we abide that and patiently waited our turn in the office
Hours later Two gently dressed Somali men and a school boy walked in, passed by us and went straight to his office “mind you we are at the waiting bay to be called in”. they confidently walked in and took their respective seat waiting to be served .
We looked at each other and once asked ourselves one question which was “what s wrong with this people; are they not seeing us we are waiting to go in and get served? Do they think they are more important than us? What gave them the guts of walking past us and go into the office?
Then with all this questions the answer was obvious one “they are Somalis “then what? Asked one of our members ,then he responded “we Somalis don’t respect time , we are always in a hurry and we always want to be served first “they al confirmed to that explanation.
So the big question for how long will the Somalis be in a hurry and disrespect time .what makes us to be in a hurry and disrespect time that way?
This can be partly attributed to the policies intended from the colonial masters who carried the day in Somalia coupled with socialistic ideologies that were embraced after the country gained independence but this again can only hold water for the once who were born and brought up in Somalia. What about the one who were born and brought up in Kenya? Kenya is a capitalist state and former Britain colony ,the Britons are not lazy and have lots of respect for time, the typical Kenyans are like that, they have patience to be in line and wait to be served.
The Somalis shall also emulate the same and respect time and protocol. But to add an insult to an injury, the problem worsen when the person is an office holder or he or she has a particular status in the society, they don’t breach protocol and time only but demand to be treated with high accolade. They don’t realize the same people that are leaving in queues are the ones who propelled them to that status.
Somalis reading this article wherever you are lets be humble observe time and more so respect people and norms. The person who is before is equivocally late as you claim to be and he or she has other things to attend to like you clam to do. Age is an exceptional in this and age too is pegged to respect always observe time to avoid breaching others people’s rights.
Ends…..
