Duale, who has not declared his interest to battle it out with former deputy speaker in the 10th parliament is said to be building his popularity in Kamukunji constituency currently represented in the Parliament by Yusuf Hassan. Yussuf Hassan is is set to retire from politics after his term expires in 2017. He will resume his diplomatic career as he aspires for a top job at the UN in New York.

The source adds that Duale has been meeting leaders from the constituency as well as vouch for support in the diaspora.

Kamukunji has a sizable number of Somali voters and Duale is set to cash in on the number to advance his political career. The constituency has voted for Jubilee in the last General Elections.

In his backyard in Township Constituency in Garissa, Farah maalim has declared interest to vie, saying he was sought by the area Ulamaa’s (Muslim religious leaders) since Duale was in the forefront in the formulation of anti-terror laws that Muslims termed as discriminatory. They also accused Duale of not addressing the extrajudicial killings allegedly perpetrated by the security forces.

In Kamukunji, his prospect of winning the seat is high as he was the leader that threatened walk-out from Jubliee in protest over the “Usalama Watch” security campaign that targeted alleged illegal immigrants and Shabab sympathysers.

Contacted for comment, Duale texted: “Biggest lie on earth.”
