GARISSA—Heavy rains that continue to pound most parts of Garissa County for over a week now pose a major threat to the residents as outbreak of diseases is feared. River Tana bank busted earlier this week.

The residents now face a major problem in the outbreak of water borne diseases, malaria and cold related infections.

The heavy rains have affected different regions including Mororo, Balambala, Ijara and Lagdera where the locals have been forced to seek shelter in higher grounds.

Tusmo Ogle, the Kenya Red Cross County coordinator said toilets in many villages in the outskirts of Garissa town, have caved in following the heavy showers.

“We fear for possible outbreak of cholera and other water-borne diseases. We have sent out teams to access the damages and requirements for the affected families in Gurufa, Bura and other flooded areas in Dadaab sub-county,” she said.

Tusmo also noted that in Mororo village where there are no latrines, children had already started showing signs of diarrhea.

Speaking to Kulan post, Abdi Musa a resident from Mororo said his house had been submerged and everything washed away.

“I have lost everything including my house, I am not alone, most people here are spending nights in the cold and have not received help from the government or humanitarian agencies.” Musa said.

Halima Ilesa, the chairperson of Sala Ward, showed concern that displaced residents have erected their temporary shelters near Garissa Bridge that presents a threat to outbreak of malaria.

“We fear an outbreak of malaria since most residents don’t have mosquito nets. We are appealing to the government and humanitarian agencies to come to our aid,” Halima noted.

Major roads linking Garissa County have also been rendered impassable, raising concern on how the locals will get immediate assistance.
