NAIROBI—Former Wajir governor’s aid shed some light on governor Mohamed Abdi’s degree saga in an interview with local Somali  TV network.

An aide to former Wajir governor Ahmed Abdullahi claimed a former MP and a current legislator from Wajir were the first to disclose the status of academic papers or lack of degree of incumbent Wajir governor, Mohamed Abdi Mohamud.

Yahya Dahiye, who served as communication director during Abdullahi’s reign, sensationally claimed that the two long serving MPs were the first to bring the matter to the limelight when  they supported Abdullahi and opposed Abdi in the 2013 gubernatorial elections.

“Although it came as a surprise to the people, the fact that Mohamed Abdi had no valid degree was first discovered in 2013 when two veteran politicians from the county were supporting our candidate, Abdullahi.

The two of them solely knew that the ambassador had no valid academic documents, but it was never used against him as he conceded the defeat,” said Dahiye who was speaking in a morning talk show on Star Televission Network on Tuesday.

Dahiye further claimed that the plan was to use the evidence against ambassador Mohamud in the event that he won in 2013. The court used the degree matter to dissolve Abdi’s 2017 election win.

The matter is now at the mercy of the Supreme Court which is set to conclude mid next month.

Dahiye fell short of naming the two politicians, but he clearly described them as either serving or retired MPs who switched camps by supporting both Abdullahi and ambassador Mohamud in 2013 and 2017 elections respectively.

Abdi’s election was in January this year nullified by high court judge Alfred Mabeya ruling that he was not validly cleared to vie as he did not have a basic degree.

The judge further stated that the petitioners Ahmed Abdullahi and Ahmed Muhumed were able to put in doubt whether Abdi had completed his A level or O level education. The matter is now at the mercy of the Supreme Court which is set to conclude mid next month.
