GARISSA—Garissa High School students go on rampage on Wednesday destroying stalls to protest an alleged school land grabbing.
Hundreds of angry students blocked the busy Kismayu road as they matched to the governor’s office building, which also houses the regional and county administrators.
The students caused a snarl up as businesses were closed before they were addressed by the County Commissioner.
“We know what is happening in your school and we promise we will look into the matter as the law will take its cause,” Said Joshua Chepchieng.
The students claimed a private developer pulled down the fence of the institution and started constructing stalls on the land during the school holiday.
“when we closed school, a powerful person came and destroyed the fence and built some stalls. We want our land back and perpetrator brought to book.” Ahmed Ali a form three student told Kulan Post.
Garissa High School is the only National boys secondary school in Garissa County.
Most schools in the country re-opened today for the second term as some act as homes to Internally Displaced People who were affected by raging flood.
The Education Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Amina Mohamed has temporarily postponed the re-opening of schools which act as safer grounds for the IDPs.
