Kulan PostGARISSA—Garissa Governor Ali Korane has urged the county residents to give his administration more time to deliver on development promises.
In his Friday speech read by the County Secretary Abdi Muhumed Korane, the governor noted that it was difficult for his administration to carry out meaningful development because the National Treasury only disburses limited funds.
This was during the 55th Madaraka Day celebrations held at Garissa Primary School in Garissa County.
“As a matter of fact, we have not received any significant funding since we came into office nine months ago. This has made it difficult for us to finance activities that would have impacted positively on our people,” he said.
Korane maintained that despite the shortcomings he was determined to implement all programmes lined up in his manifesto.
He assured the residents he would deliver as time goes by and maintained failure to deliver would be unacceptable in his regime.
The governor cited some of his successes since he took over, saying he had signed an agreement with Hitech of the Netherlands to build 2,000km of tarmac roads in three years.
Mr.Korane also announced his plans to launch a clean up programme called kazi mashinani in July set to benefit over 100 women and unemployed youth.
“This will go a long way as a safety net and alleviate poverty among our people. Before the programme starts, we shall seek the endorsement of the county assembly,” the governor noted.
Korane said he was working around the clock and had partnered with humanitarian assistance agencies and the national government to aid flood victims.
“Thousands of residents have been left homeless millions of shillings of property has been destroyed by the recent floods we are working tirelessly to he most deserving cases are assisted.” said governor Korane.
In his speech Korane maintained providing clean water, improving healthcare and food security were still among his top priorities.
On agriculture, he said his administration would establish robust programmes to ensure food security. He said more than 2.3 million acres of arable land would be put under irrigation.
Most residents who attended the Madaraka celebrations expressed their disappointment by the no-show move by the governor.
“How can a whole county Governor miss such an important event. Sending juniors as representatives to preside over such events is an insult to the electorate who voted for him. Am not impressed by the conduct of the governor totally,” Abdi Hassan, an attendee said.
