NAIROBI—A male teacher at Moi Girls High in Nairobi has been ordered to take a DNA test by police in connection with the rape of a student in the institution early Saturday morning.

The drama teacher, Robinson Mudavadi is said to have committed the crime together with two other men.

Such tests are important in  determining sexual violence cases as they allow forensic experts to compare the profile of a suspect against the evidence of bodily fluids found on the victim, and therefore, carry more weight in court than verbal submissions.

Reports indicated that the student was raped in the ablution block and she was left lying on the ground for up to 4 hours. A female teacher is reported to have told the girl to clean up and not talk about the incident in exchange of a scholarship.

The rape victim and two other girls have given the police a physical description of the alleged attacker. Sources around the investigations said they described a short man in his 30s. He is stout and has squinted eyes, they said.

“The description given so far does not match any of the staff members, including security guards,” a police source said.

As part of school policy, four teachers must be on duty every week. One of the four must live in the school. It’s unclear if any of the teachers on duty was in school.
