GARISSA-–Heavy rains that have continuously pounded most parts of Garissa county for the last two weeks have rendered hundreds of residents homeless.

River Tana broke its bank forcing residents to seek shelter in higher grounds. It has also posed to the residents outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Speaking to Kulan post, Hussein Ahmed a resident from Waberi Ward said his house had been submerged and everything washed away.

“Our houses have collapsed and all our properties have been washed away. We have now erected temporary shelters as we wait for assistance,” he said.

The Kenya Red cross has showed concern that due to the heavy showers, even those who have moved to higher grounds are now prone as the temporary erected houses cannot hold for long.

Residents of Madogo village have been urged to move to Madogo primary school before the school re-opens.

Fafi Member of Parliament, Abdikarim took relief to Mansabubu residents on Monday who are also affected by the floods.

Halima Ilesa, the chairperson of Sala Ward last week, noted that a number of Garissa residents who had moved near Garissa bridge were exposed to great danger especially to children.

“The displaced residents have built their shelters near Garissa bridge with children playing dangerously near the river oblivious of the risk.” Halima noted.

Garissa county commissioner Joshua Chepchieng said the most affected areas include Mansabubu in Fafi sub-county, Gurufa in Lagdera sub-county, and parts of Balambala and Dadaab sub-counties.
