WAJIR—Wajir leaders and education stakeholders met in Wajir town on the weekend to discuss the shocking result registered by schools in the vast constituency.

The school in Wajir South were worst hit due to the area’s proximity to the Somali border.

Led by the area Member of Parliament, Mohamud Oomar the stakeholders pointed the finger of blame at the parents for not seeking accountability and the infrastructure that they said were not adequate.

“The education status of the region and more so Wajir county is not amusing,’’ Oomar said at the conference held at Wajir Resort.

“I want to challenge the parents to hold the teachers accountable and continuously asses the education status of the school their children attend,”Dr Oomar, a lecturer at five oversea universities, said.

The schools in the constituency did not record A, A- and B+. The teachers blamed the low score of the national test on the exodus of the non-local teachers.

“We can achieve better results when we all come together as parents and teachers…we can’t leave everything to the teachers alone,” OOmar added.

His sentiments were echoed by Muktar Ogle, former KNEC National Coordinator and now the Secretary, Strategic Initiatives: Cabinet Affairs who said the parent’s contribution was particularly missing.

“Parents have be there for the children to perform,”Muktar said at the start of his presentation.

While presenting last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) county results, the County Director of Education said 62% of the candidates were not eligible for university courses.

“That is why we want to introduce an apprenticeship program for the students who failed to satisfy the minimum university entry marks,” Dr Oomar said.

The two-day education stakeholders meeting ended on Sunday with a challenge to the residents to discourage “our son” mentality when engaging teachers on their performance and placement.
