GARISSA—Garissa Township Member of Parliament Aden Duale has condemned a dissension that took place at Fafi Girls Secondary during a parents’ day meeting.

The incident occurred when Fafi MP Abdikarim Osman blocked the Director of Basic Education Habat Sheikh Abdi, who was the guest of  honour, from addressing the gathering.

Osman demanded that the programme be changed to make him the guest of honour.

“Children look up to us as role models. When we resort to fighting and name-calling, we set a bad example,” the National Assembly Majority leader said.

Security forces at the event shot into the air to disperse angry youths belonging to different camps after they started hurling stones.

This comes after Community elders in Fafi, called for a ban of public events claiming that politicians use the platforms to score political points at the expense of the peace and well-being of the host community.

“We are peace-loving residents and we don’t want any chaos brought about by politicians. That is why we are banning any political rallies in the constituency until differences are resolved,” Mzee Ali said.

The Elders drawn from all sub-clans in the constituency, warned of chaos ahead of Duale’s visit and asked the area security team to maintain peace, saying effort to cool off tension in the girl’s secondary school had failed.

Others who condemned the incident are Sophia Abdinoor (Ijara), Omar Shurie (Balambala), woman representative Annab Gure and Fafi’s Abdikarim Osman.

“Politicians should focus on serving the electorate, not political sideshows,” Bura MCA Abdullahi Omar said.
