GARISSA—Garissa County residents now have something to smile about after Freedom Airline launched its first flight in the area on Sunday.

Speaking to the press after seeing off the first bunch of travelers, Shillow Abukar the manager of the airline said that the agency will be consistent and urged the residents to travel by air emphasizing it will be faster and more affordable.

The airline will operate only on Mondays and Fridays and will; charge Ksh.5000 per passenger.

According to Shillow he decided to venture into the business following numerous requests from Garissa residents.

The airline intends to make daily trips to and from Garissa but this decision will however depend on the number of passengers boarding the plane.

Fatuma Abdi a nominated MCA from Garissa, who was among the first crew to board the flight, welcomed it.

She termed the move as effective as it will not only reduce the cost of travelling but also the duration.

She challenged them to also start direct flights from Garissa to Mombasa and Lamu saying that many have business interests in the areas but it is hectic to travel by road.

Ahmed Jelle, a local business man, from Garissa said that the sick have always been forced to travel for long distances while being rushed to Nairobi for treatment but this will no longer be the case as they will travel in a more convenient manner.

This is not the first airline to be launched in Garissa. Sagal Airline launched its operations two years ago but did not last long because there were no passengers to sustain its operations.

Freedom Airline Express Limited is a limited liability, privately owned company which was established in Kenya on April 2008.
