Garissa county Governor Ali Bunow Korane has appealed to the international community and donors to help in matters of crop production and livestock rearing. This will ease in the current situation and challenges faced by the pastoral community who are at large in the county.
He also urged the international donors to work hand in hand with the county government in efforts to face the prolonged drought that has prolonged in the area.
“I am appealing to the international donors to join my government in droughts mitigation program so that we serve our people” he said
Speaking at Garissa hotel today, the governor said Garissa is one of the least developed communities and the county is currently undergoing a challenging social transformation such as climate change and environmental degradation due to refugees residing from the county and also the vast growing population.
“The environmental degradation and climate change caused by the residents are major factor in the transformation we are going on” he stated.
He added that 90% of the residents living in the county depended on nomadic pastoralism for their lively hood but because of some serious whether pattern nomadic pastoralism as the key source is disappearing very fast.
The governor said there are some local donors who used to donate food to this region few years back to more than 150 poverty pledges in the county but that wasn’t the case as inside these donors were involved in corruption activities.
“Those donors used to stay in the entire month until the last day that is when they make food donation ,as the county has more than 150 poverty pledges We want you with your full support to develop an alternative methods” korane said.
The high level dignitaries who comprised of high commissioners, Swiss Norwegian and Swedish ambassadors to Kenya accompanied by the frontier county development council (FCDC) top officials and some other donor agencies were on familiarization tour to check in areas of livestock and agriculture within the vicinity of the county and also forms more than 60% of the county’s economy.
However the delegates led by ambassador Ralf heckler from Switzerland promised the governor they will give their full support and commit themselves to the people of Garissa in delivering effectively mainly in areas of food production and modern livestock rearing mechanism.
