TSC begins transferring teachers from unsafe area to secure stations within Wajir County

WAJIR—Teachers in perceived terror hotspot areas have been served with transfer letters—effective today—to leave their stations to new learning areas away from the border.

While confirming the transfers, the county director of Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Solomon Nyasiwa said move was aimed at saving lives of the teachers. He, however, did not elaborate the affected stations.

In 2018, the TSC was tasked to explain how it moved teachers from Wajir West and Wajir North constituencies despite the area recording zero terror attacks.

“We are relocating teachers from area that are insecure to area and schools we feel are okay,” Nyasiwa told Kulan Post during an interview at his office in Wajir town.

But unlike in 2018, the TSC is now transferring the teacher to stations within the county and not to other parts of the country.

“The teachers have already been issued with the (transfer) letters and posted to secure areas within the county,” Nyasiwa added.

He also called on teachers in areas mapped as unsafe such as the upper Wajir East, Tarbaj and Wajir South constituencies to report to their respective TSC offices and seek transfers if they feel insecure for fear of Shabab attack.

“We are movingly them to safer grounds to ensure that they are discharging their roles without any challenges. I think that’s the best support we can give them as of now,” Nyasiwa stated. 

The TSC mass transfer move comes a day after the Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) told its member teachers to leave sections of northeastern region citing insecurity and lack of willingness by the government to secure the teachers.

On Monday morning, a heavily armed militants attacked the school killing, the non local teachers and left one with serious bullet wounds.

The deceased were identified as Caleb Mutua aged 28, Titus Mshindi aged 29 and 30-year-old Samuel Muthui.
